Tom Malinowski cosponsored a bill introduced on Jan. 16, 2019 that will “amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to provide that an alien may not be denied admission or entry to the United States, or other immigration benefits, because of the aliens religion, and for other purposes.” The bill is meant to both defend an alien’s right to enter a country through legal documentation as well as halt any prosecution during that process towards the immigrant’s religion
A report from CNN on Jan. 9, 2019 documents that “Democratic Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey is asking the Departments of Homeland Security and Justice to retract findings from a controversial 2018 report that loosely tied immigration and terrorism that the administration has acknowledged "could be criticized" as misleading.” The incident is once again an indication that Booker wishes to remain unbiased and impartial in any accusations of immigrants also being terrorists, wishing to find concrete reports based truly on facts, especially during Trump’s already controversial presidency. On Jan. 9,2019, in an article by NJ.com, U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez rejected an invitation to appear with President Donald Trump at the White House, saying he was protesting the president’s "despicable” immigration policies and willingness to shutdown the government over his southern border wall. Menendez went on to say that “[he] did not want to be a potted plant for the president’s despicable policies as it relates to immigrants and the whole question of the southern border.” The decline is once again a stalwart point that shows Menendez’s distaste for Trump’s administration, including his ongoing shutdown and his persistent policies towards immigration. ~ Sean W.
