Over the past two weeks, Assemb. Andrew Zwicker has recently sponsored a bill relating to the protection against cybersecurity threats. He has also made efforts to incorporate people with recent Phds in science and engineering in the state government to better inform legislators of the scientific aspects related to certain issues. Currently there is no significant news regarding Assemblyman Roy Freiman. Senator Kip Bateman has recently made a proposal for a “Renewable Energy Day”, and has co sponsored a bill relating to privacy including the use of drones. Lastly, Governor Phil Murphy continues an initiative to the use of renewable energy sources and the implementation of “Alyssa’s Law”.
~ Nidalia W. A bill partly sponsored by Assemblyman Andrew Zwicker passed its committee on February 14th. Its aim is to inform small businesses of methods of protection against cybersecurity threats.
Senator Kip Bateman cosponsored a bill which would clarify trespassing and invasion of privacy, including the use of unmanned aircraft systems, generally referred to as drones. On February 6th, Governor Phil Murphy signed “Alyssa’s Law”, legislation which requires New Jersey public schools to install silent panic alarms that can be activated in case of an active-shooter situation. There was no significant news on security regarding Assemblyman Roy Freiman. ~ Karina Z. Andrew Zwicker, himself a physicist, led an effort to place people with recent Phds in science and engineering in the state government to inform the legislators about the scientific aspects of issues. Explaining the purpose of the bill, Zwicker said that it was to “provide a level of scientific expertise to state legislators” and to “introduce the fellows in the first class and the following classes to what's going on in Trenton.” Additionally, Zwicker, chair of the committee on science, innovation, and technology says he plans to support several bills giving residents of the state more online privacy, telling WHYY, “[t]his is really about giving consumers power over their data.”
Roy Freiman accomplished nothing major related to science or technology recently. Kip Bateman’s bill to limit drilling on the outer continental shelf recently passed the senate. Bateman also sponsored a bill to make May 23 of every year “Renewable Energy Day” in New Jersey. He also made a bill opposing the Northeast Supply Enhancement Project, an effort to deliver natural gas to the Northeast. Governor Phil Murphy seems to be encountering increased opposition to his environmental policy as approximately 12 fossil fuel-based projects move forward in planning. Murphy leads an initiative to source 50% of the state’s electricity through renewable energy by 2030 and appears to be opposed to the projects. ~ Sam S. A bill recently sponsored by Assemblyman Andrew Zwicker and several others ensures hospitals place a warning in patient discharge papers concerning the risk of opioid medication addiction.

On February 15th, Governor Phil Murphy announced grant awards totalling $2.8 million for seven NJ businesses and higher education institutions to fund training programs which will hire 480 new apprentices over the next 12 months. He stated that this program would invest in “good-paying, skilled, jobs” to “promote economic growth” in “high-demand industry sectors”. ~ Allen Z. Phil Murphy criticized President Trump’s State of the Union Address, by stating that Trump’s policies did not do enough to protect DREAMERS.
~ Annie Z. On January 31st, The United States Department of Justice dropped the federal corruption charges against Senator Bob Menendez. This news is following an indictment in 2015, when Menendez was charged with using his power to elicit favors for a personal acquaintance.
Meanwhile, on February 1st, the beginning of Black History Month, Junior Senator Cory Booker announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination in the 2020 Presidential election. More recently, Representative Tom Malinowski pointed out the hypocrisy in President Donald Trump’s State of the Union speech. In a post on his Twitter page, he acknowledged the president for commending a holocaust survivor, but pointed out that this person would not have been able to immigrate here, under the current refugee policies. ~ Arjun A. On January 22th, Representative Tom Malinowski (D-NJ) remarked on co-sponsoring a bill that would prevent US withdrawal from NATO. He expressed disappointment that such action was needed, stressing several benefits of the organization.
There was no significant new regarding Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) regarding foreign policy. On January 25th, Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Chris Coons (D-DE) released a statement on the recent election in the DR Congo.
